the EXERCISE 17 was held in couple.

the aim was to tell a short story (put drawing into narration) in 2 frames (2 A4 drawings).

the first one is drawn by one of you and the otherone is your model; for the second  one you will exchange roles: the artist will become the model.

you can use text if you want.

for the next time

– you have to tell a story on your A3 sheet in 8 frames (BOARD 10). Think to comics and storyboards.

the particularity of your story is that the first frame – the beginning of the story – has to reproduce the contents of BOARD 9 (draw it again, smaller, to fit it into the frame); the last frame – the end of the story – has to reproduce the contents of BOARD 1 (the object, draw it again).

ok the journey inside developement of the object is completed…

– …take a picture of each BOARD you did and bring the files;

– bring each BOARD. we will choose together the image you will use for linoleography workshop of next week.

– bring the t-shirt (or pants, undershirts.. – it only has to be cotton made and light colors) you want print on during the workshop;

– please make a Photocopy of EXERCISE 17 on an A3 sheet: you should put the two drawings of your story on the same page. do 3 copies – one for you two and one for me.

8_1.23.12

when you draw a body (when you draw everything) you should think to the physical extension of this body into the space. you should imagine the weight and the warmth of this body to give him reality.

you have to imagine what there is inside, what you do not see (muscles, skeleton..). only imagining the whole body you’ll be able copy and to inventing it.

if you have any doubt (about how you can represent  a leg movement, how you can copy an arm in a strange position, how you can give the idea of surprise into a face…) it is very simple: you test this position on your own body, you become your model, you take a mirror and you copy yourself.

drawing a body, first you have to draw the axes of your charachter. there is a standard “canone” for human body. of course everyone is different. but knowing it can help you a lot.

than you have to draw the volumes inside. sketch the masses – the chest, the pelvis..- . sketch each part of the body as a pure-solid shape – parallelepipeds, squares, spheres: it will be more easy to understand proportions between body  parts and put them in perspective. (if you are coping someone, forget clothes for a while, you have sketch first the naked body, than you will literally dress it). keep in mind how your body works, to copy postures in the proper way. (i would like to give a lesson about physical relation between body and space, like a short dance-class. it would be quite complicate in our class, but here you find some note about it. watch the video, it talks about anatomy!).

you can now proceed by drawing details – face, hands, clothes

that was EXERCISE 16: you were in couple and one was the model of the other. than you exchanged.

for the next time:

you take board 8 (the city) and you choose few elements – like 2-3 buildings.

in BOARD 9 you draw these buildings again but as they were pieces of forniture. on these pieces of forniture you draw a charachter:a woman sit on a chair, a man lied on a bed. you are asked to copy a real model (i.e. a friend). of course, this exercise is about human body, so this drawing has to be really welldone and proportioned.  at the end, you’ll go over by ink.

remember that each board and exercise have to be numbered and organized. for the exam you will be asked to bring everything: exercises in one folder, boards in one folder.

anatomy and canone

there are different Canone of proportion to draw human body.

remember that is is mor easy to draw a body in perspective if you inscribe the body into a parallelepiped. you can than draw your parallelepiped into the correct perspective view, and draw inside the body. each part of the body, drawn first as voulmes, are parallelepiped in perspective as well.

body

remember that your body is made by hard and soft parts. touch your own body to understand where it can be bent, where you can press and where you can’t, how you can keep and lose balance, wich parts can support the whole body’s weight. test your baricentrum. if you keep in mind this test on your body, you’ll be able to draw a  human body in a correct way beacuse you know how does it works.
