the EXERCISE 17 was held in couple.

the aim was to tell a short story (put drawing into narration) in 2 frames (2 A4 drawings).

the first one is drawn by one of you and the otherone is your model; for the second  one you will exchange roles: the artist will become the model.

you can use text if you want.


for the next time

– you have to tell a story on your A3 sheet in 8 frames (BOARD 10). Think to comics and storyboards.

the particularity of your story is that the first frame – the beginning of the story – has to reproduce the contents of BOARD 9 (draw it again, smaller, to fit it into the frame); the last frame – the end of the story – has to reproduce the contents of BOARD 1 (the object, draw it again).

ok the journey inside developement of the object is completed…

– …take a picture of each BOARD you did and bring the files;

– bring each BOARD. we will choose together the image you will use for linoleography workshop of next week.

– bring the t-shirt (or pants, undershirts.. – it only has to be cotton made and light colors) you want print on during the workshop;

– please make a Photocopy of EXERCISE 17 on an A3 sheet: you should put the two drawings of your story on the same page. do 3 copies – one for you two and one for me.

when you draw a body (when you draw everything) you should think to the physical extension of this body into the space. you should imagine the weight and the warmth of this body to give him reality.

you have to imagine what there is inside, what you do not see (muscles, skeleton..). only imagining the whole body you’ll be able copy and to inventing it.

if you have any doubt (about how you can represent  a leg movement, how you can copy an arm in a strange position, how you can give the idea of surprise into a face…) it is very simple: you test this position on your own body, you become your model, you take a mirror and you copy yourself.

drawing a body, first you have to draw the axes of your charachter. there is a standard “canone” for human body. of course everyone is different. but knowing it can help you a lot.

than you have to draw the volumes inside. sketch the masses – the chest, the pelvis..- . sketch each part of the body as a pure-solid shape – parallelepipeds, squares, spheres: it will be more easy to understand proportions between body  parts and put them in perspective. (if you are coping someone, forget clothes for a while, you have sketch first the naked body, than you will literally dress it). keep in mind how your body works, to copy postures in the proper way. (i would like to give a lesson about physical relation between body and space, like a short dance-class. it would be quite complicate in our class, but here you find some note about it. watch the video, it talks about anatomy!).

you can now proceed by drawing details – face, hands, clothes

that was EXERCISE 16: you were in couple and one was the model of the other. than you exchanged.


for the next time:

you take board 8 (the city) and you choose few elements – like 2-3 buildings.

in BOARD 9 you draw these buildings again but as they were pieces of forniture. on these pieces of forniture you draw a charachter:a woman sit on a chair, a man lied on a bed. you are asked to copy a real model (i.e. a friend). of course, this exercise is about human body, so this drawing has to be really welldone and proportioned.  at the end, you’ll go over by ink.

remember that each board and exercise have to be numbered and organized. for the exam you will be asked to bring everything: exercises in one folder, boards in one folder.

anatomy and canone

there are different Canone of proportion to draw human body.

remember that is is mor easy to draw a body in perspective if you inscribe the body into a parallelepiped. you can than draw your parallelepiped into the correct perspective view, and draw inside the body. each part of the body, drawn first as voulmes, are parallelepiped in perspective as well.

remember that your body is made by hard and soft parts. touch your own body to understand where it can be bent, where you can press and where you can’t, how you can keep and lose balance, wich parts can support the whole body’s weight. test your baricentrum. if you keep in mind this test on your body, you’ll be able to draw a  human body in a correct way beacuse you know how does it works.

perspective is a way to represent reality, not the only one. while perspective draws a perfectly geometrical world, we know, for example, that human eye see less than 180° pretended by perspective rules. Between us and reality you have light, atmosphere, coloring, and your physical and psychical state as well. There is an historical reason in perspective’s birth.

“The convention of perspective, which is unique to European art and which was first established in the early Renaissance, centres everything on the eye of the beholder. It is like a beam from lighthouse –only instead of light travelling outwards, appearances travel in. The conventions called those appearances reality . Perspective makes the single eye the centre of the visible world. Everything converges on to the eye as to the vanishing point of infinity. The visible world is arranged for the spectator as the universe was once thought to be arranged for God.” J. Berger

anyway,  we need to understand how does it works.

now the EXERCISE 15 was to copy this drawing.

first, by pencil. than using the light-table to clean up your sketch (you take a new sheet, you put it on your sketch and you trace only good lines of your previous sketch. if you do not have a light-table you can use a window). than you test your pen nib and brush with ink.

this drawin is made by sergio toppi, cartoonist, a real master of ink.


for the next time: BOARD 8

transform the object you draw in the last board into a city. you can invent, you can transform the shape into a plan, you can use only edges and give them a new function..

you just have to draw buildings and streets in perspective, sketch it and than trace by ink.

after holidays I completed mid term evaluations.

in the meanwhile, the EXERCISE 14 was to go out and copy a choosen view: you sit down with your pencil and a sheet with an hard back behind.

when you copy something you should start by sketching volumes, ground and horizon line.

when you think everything is proportioned, you can work inside volumes, coping details.

you may take misuration of objects and buildings using your pencil as a rule: you have just to fix a unit and compare it to doors, windows, buildings size.

you will proceed by comparision.

i.e., if the height of a window is your unit, the door will be 2 times the unit, the man in front of the door will be a half of the unit, the building will be 8 times the unit…

take time to observe. you just have to copy what you see in front of you. nothing else.



– complete, update, draw again what you miss. look to the summary. for the exam you will be asked to bring everything: each exercise, numbered and kept into a folder; each board, numbered and kept into a folder.

EXERCISE 15: copy what you see out of your window by pencil. try to represent textures of different materials

– bring a brush n.4 (pennello), a standard pen nib (pennino), a small bottle of black ink (inchiostro di china)

first we spoke about notebooks and carnet de voyage:








carthography  and psycogeography

you have now to tell your next holidays in a narrative way: you can have your diary on a notebook, or on a big map, or you can invent your own notebook to represent what you will do and where you will go. remember you’re a designer. you should take notes about objects and spaces as well!

than, during the midterm evaluations, you made EX 13: choose 3 object, make a composition on the table and copy them by pencil.

2. take your BOARD 4. than draw the animals in BOARD 5 transforming the volumes in geometrical shapes in 2D.

you trace now these shapes on cardboard and cut them. you can either cut in smaller figures. they just must be geometrical.

you play with these shapes moving tem and composing objects like in TANGRAM game. enjoy. you have to find a composition that seems like an object.

found? ok. stick the shapes in the correct postion on BOARD 6.

now take this objact you found with your tangram. take a real one.

now you copy the real object (with shadings and shadows) on BOARD 7.
